Following the killing of several Ethiopian refugees in a US airstrike on a refugee camp run by the Houthis in Yemen in April 2024, Amnesty International has called for an investigation, stating that the act may constitute a war crime.

Amnesty International said the US military strike on April2024, as part of Operation Rough Rider, “violated international humanitarian law.”

According to the organization report The airstrike, which targeted a camp housing refugees held by Houthi authorities for alleged illegal immigration, was “a known location for civilians.

“The harrowing testimonies of survivors paint a clear picture of how the camp, despite being a building full of civilians and full of detainees, was brutally attacked,” said Christine Beckerl, Amnesty International’s deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa.

“The survivors of this attack must receive full, effective and prompt reparations,” said Christine Beckerl, Amnesty International’s deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa.

Amnesty further warned that critical US strategies designed to address civilian casualties are now under threat from the Trump administration, and urged the US Congress to ensure that the strategies are adequately funded and implemented.
