The Amhara Regional State has announced plans to remove all illegal checkpoints that have been collecting revenue in the region.

In a letter to zone and city revenue departments, the Amhara National Regional State Revenue Bureau cited disruptions caused by the checkpoints, noting that they delayed and unfairly charged agricultural and industrial production. The bureau said this has raised production costs and, in turn, increased the cost of living, placing additional pressure on consumers.

The Regional Peace and Security Bureau informed the Revenue Bureau that some checkpoints were lifted due to a slowdown in economic activity.

The regional government reiterated that it had previously mandated the removal of checkpoints nationwide to ensure the free movement of goods. However, the announcement acknowledged that the directive had not been uniformly enforced in certain areas of the region.
