The International Committee of the Red Cross has reported that fighting between government forces and Fano forces has intensified in the Amhara region, especially in the northern Wollo zone, since mid-September.

While Fano forces have announced that they have launched a coordinated campaign and are preparing for victory, the local administration has mentioned that there have been clashes and told the BBC that this is "not as it is being reported."

Residents said that there had been a struggle for days to capture Woldiya, the capital of the North Wollo Zone.

Last week, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote to the United Nations, accusing Eritrea, including the TPLF, of supporting Fano forces in the battle to capture Woldiya.

The statement issued by the International Committee of the Red Cross indicates the depth of the conflict in the area and the damage caused.

A Red Cross team has been monitoring the major cities and areas of the North Wollo zone, where the fighting has been intense for a week, and has reported a large number of deaths, hostages and serious humanitarian damage.
