American Airlines is expanding its premium offering at Charlotte Douglas International Airport with plans for a more than 40,000-square-foot Admirals Club lounge, which will become the largest in the airline’s network.

Construction is due to begin this year, with the new lounge planned for the mezzanine level of the airport’s atrium. Its central location will give travellers views over the concourse, while the existing Admirals Club facilities will remain open during construction.

The project is part of a wider investment by American Airlines in Charlotte, its second-largest hub. The airline announced last year that it would increase lounge capacity at the airport and introduce its first Flagship lounge there.

The new facility will be divided into areas designed for different traveller needs, including dining, working and relaxation. It will also include spa-style shower suites, bars and serveries.

American said the design would draw on elements associated with Charlotte, including its tree canopy and textile heritage, while combining modern design with the city’s Southern character.

Charlotte is a major connecting point for American, linking millions of passengers to more than 180 destinations across 27 countries. The airline operates more than 650 peak daily flights from the airport.

“Designing a lounge that gives our customers more space to relax, work and recharge is our top priority,” said Heather Garboden, American Airlines’ chief customer officer.

Ralph Lopez Massas, the airline’s senior vice-president of Charlotte operations, said the new lounge would represent continued investment in the airport and the airline’s relationship with the city.

The existing Provisions by Admirals Club lounge near Gate A1, along with the Admirals Club lounges in Concourses B and C/D, will continue serving passengers while the new facility is being built.
