Algeria has launched its 2026 oil and gas licensing round, offering seven exploration blocks as it seeks to draw foreign investment and strengthen output in its upstream energy sector. The government said the initiative, branded the “Algeria Bid Round 2026”, was unveiled in Algiers at a ceremony attended by representatives of international energy companies.

Hydrocarbons Minister Mohamed Arkab said the round is intended to reinforce Algeria’s role in global energy markets and support broader energy security objectives, as the country continues efforts to sustain its production base. The offered blocks are spread across Ouargla, Illizi, Touggourt and El Bayadh, covering a mix of oil and gas prospects.

Authorities estimate the sites hold hundreds of millions of barrels of crude oil alongside significant volumes of natural gas. The bidding process will open its technical phase on June 1, when companies will gain access to tender documents and online presentations. This will be followed by data sessions and clarification meetings running through October 31.

Bid submissions are scheduled for November 26, after which contracts with the state-owned company Sonatrach are expected to be signed on January 31 next year. Depending on the block, agreements will take the form of production-sharing or participation contracts.

Businesses in oil and gas exploration, energy investment and related services are expected to closely monitor the licensing round as Algeria seeks to attract foreign capital to boost its upstream sector.

Overall, Algeria’s 2026 oil and gas licensing round reflects the country’s continued efforts to draw international investment and strengthen its position in global energy markets.
