Airtel, a major Indian telecommunications operator, has announced plans to enter the home fiber internet market, backed by a $150 million investment in a new data center at Tatu City.
The move comes as demand for high-speed internet continues to rise across urban households and businesses in Kenya.
The company has also been investing in network coverage and customer service infrastructure, reinforcing its ambition to strengthen its position in Kenya’s highly competitive telecommunications sector. Airtel has achieved modest market share gains over the past year.
The data center is expected to be completed by 2027, marking a significant milestone in Airtel’s broader push to boost digital infrastructure in East Africa.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, executives said the new facility will provide enterprise-grade and residential connectivity, while also prioritizing sustainability, security, and resilience.
Currently, Airtel’s home internet offering is centered on its Smartbox fixed wireless access device, which includes enhanced indoor coverage and backup power.
