Airtel Africa has partnered with SpaceX to introduce Starlink’s direct-to-cell satellite technology across its 14 African markets, targeting regions with limited terrestrial network coverage, Reuters reported. The service is set to launch in 2026, initially offering text messaging and limited data for compatible smartphones.

The deal also includes support for Starlink’s first broadband direct-to-cell system, with next-generation satellites capable of delivering data speeds up to twenty times faster than existing satellite-to-phone solutions.

The partnership comes amid persistent connectivity gaps in Africa, where around six hundred million people lack reliable internet and mobile penetration in sub-Saharan Africa remains low. Satellite-to-mobile solutions are increasingly seen as a cost-effective way to reach rural communities and infrastructure-limited areas.

Airtel Africa has secured licences in most of its markets, with approvals pending in a few countries. The company has also invested in expanding network coverage through a 200 million US dollar sustainability-linked financing facility from the International Finance Corporation, while its parent, Bharti Airtel, has backed other satellite ventures including OneWeb.

Globally, low Earth orbit satellites are reshaping mobile services. Ukraine’s largest operator, Kyivstar, became the first in Europe to deploy Starlink’s direct-to-cell technology last month, maintaining connectivity amid wartime infrastructure disruptions.
