Addis Ababa has launched a 24 billion birr residential housing project for 6,194 teachers in the Lemi Kura sub-city, marking the start of construction under a scheme led by the city administration.

The project was launched by Mayor Adanech Abebe, who said the city is working to address housing shortages on a sustainable basis and will continue to scale up similar initiatives.

According to the city administration, the teachers are organised into 57 cooperatives and have saved 3.8 billion birr, equivalent to 25 percent of the required financing. The remaining 75 percent is to be covered through government-arranged loan facilities.

The city administration has provided 40 hectares of land free of charge for the project, which carries a total estimated cost of 24 billion birr. Compensation payments amounting to 5 billion birr have been made in connection with the land allocation.

The housing units to be built under the scheme will be condominium-style residences that meet required construction standards and align with the city’s urban planning guidelines.

City officials said home ownership for teachers is expected to ease living costs and support their professional roles, noting that housing remains one of the key demands raised by the profession.
