Addis Ababa is set to host more than 2,600 participants from over 36 countries for a three-day conference aimed at addressing health challenges in East Africa, improving healthcare quality and strengthening regional co-operation.

The conference will begin on August 21, at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum, the Ministry of Health announced.

Organisers say the gathering will bring together health professionals, policymakers and other stakeholders to discuss ways of improving health systems across East Africa under the theme, “Building East Africa’s Health Through Resilience”.

Dr Tadesse Teferi, deputy president of the Ethiopian Health Federation, said the conference would provide a platform for countries in the region, including Ethiopia, to exchange experience and discuss common challenges facing their health sectors.

The event is also expected to focus on expanding health tourism and strengthening collaboration among medical professionals.

Frehiwot Abebe, state minister of health, said discussions would include efforts to improve the quality of healthcare services and expand digital health systems, with the aim of strengthening domestic medical services.

The conference will also examine ways to support health professionals in East Africa and increase domestic financing for the sector as countries face reductions in external assistance.

Officials said the discussions would explore how governments and domestic investors could help fill financing gaps created by declining foreign support, while strengthening regional links in the health sector.
