Addis Ababa’s street-lighting authority repaired and restored more than 1,800 damaged or bent streetlight poles during the 2018 Ethiopian fiscal year, as the capital expanded efforts to improve nighttime visibility and modernise its lighting network.

The Addis Ababa City Administration Electric Service Management Authority surveyed more than 15,000 streetlight poles across the city during the fiscal year, according to Sebsib Hussein, the authority’s director-general.

The survey was followed by the removal and straightening of more than 1,800 poles that had fallen or become bent and were no longer providing service, Sebsib said.

The authority also replaced more than 1,000 sodium streetlights with modern, energy-efficient LED fixtures during the year.

The maintenance and upgrading work has improved nighttime movement in the capital while also enhancing the city’s appearance after dark, according to Sebsib.

The work forms part of the authority’s efforts to maintain and upgrade Addis Ababa’s street-lighting infrastructure, including identifying damaged infrastructure and replacing older lighting technology with more efficient systems.
