Addis Ababa Residents Question Additional Bills Two Years After Housing Move

Residents relocated from Addis Ababa’s Piyasa area to Kaliti under an urban redevelopment programme have objected to additional payments demanded for differences in apartment sizes, two years after moving into their new homes. The residents said the request was not part of the terms communicated when they were relocated and that they were not informed they would later be required to pay for the difference in floor area between their former and current apartments.

The complaints were reported by Sheger Radio, which said the residents questioned why additional charges were introduced after the relocation process had already been completed. The Addis Ababa City Administration said the payments were related to differences in the size of the housing units provided. It said the new apartments in Kaliti are larger than the previous homes occupied by the residents.

Officials said the additional charges were calculated based on the difference in square metres between the old and new units, using the earlier, lower pricing system rather than current prices. The administration said applying the previous pricing rate was intended to reduce the financial impact on residents.
