Addis Ababa has inaugurated a modern wastewater treatment plant in Koye with the capacity to treat 20,000 cubic metres of wastewater a day, as the capital expands infrastructure to address water pollution and sanitation challenges.

Adanech Abiebie, mayor of Addis Ababa, said Sunday that the Koye project had begun operations as part of the city’s efforts to expand wastewater treatment and protect its rivers from pollution.

The facility can treat 20,000 cubic metres of wastewater daily, while the project is also associated with the production of 60,000 cubic metres of clean drinking water a day, according to the mayor.

The inauguration comes as the city reports a sharp expansion in both water supply and wastewater treatment capacity over the past five years.

Addis Ababa’s daily potable water production capacity has risen to 910,000 cubic metres from 525,000 cubic metres five years ago. The increase followed the development of water infrastructure at Tulu Guddo, Lega Dadi Phase II, Barakat residential area, Bole Arabsa and other locations.

Wastewater treatment capacity has also increased to more than 253,000 cubic metres a day from about 20,000 cubic metres in 2009, according to Abiebie.

The expansion is intended to reduce pollution in Addis Ababa’s rivers, which have been affected by untreated liquid waste and solid waste, while improving sanitation and environmental protection.

The mayor said the projects had received financing support from the World Bank, while the Oromia regional government had assisted with development around water-source areas.

She also thanked farmers who provided land for the projects and officials and technical staff of the Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority for their work on the infrastructure.
