A citywide exhibition and bazaar has opened across all sub-cities of Addis Ababa, giving consumers direct access to locally manufactured goods ahead of the Ethiopian New Year.

The week-long programme brings together food, clothing, household goods and industrial products, with organisers saying the initiative is designed to improve access to quality products at affordable prices while creating a direct link between producers and consumers.

The bazaar is expected to run for seven consecutive days through September 10, allowing residents to shop at market centres prepared across the capital ahead of the holiday.

The city administration is positioning the initiative as part of efforts to improve the supply of goods and contain price pressures by shortening the distance between manufacturers and consumers. Direct sales are also intended to reduce opportunities for illegal trading practices and unnecessary price mark-ups.

The market centres have been prepared across all sub-cities, with products from domestic manufacturers displayed alongside other consumer goods. The arrangement is intended to give producers a larger market while allowing consumers to compare and purchase goods in one location.

Holiday bazaars have become a regular feature of Addis Ababa's retail market, although previous events have faced concerns over high prices and weak consumer purchasing power.

The city administration is encouraging residents to use the designated market centres in their respective sub-cities for their New Year purchases, while manufacturers and businesses are being encouraged to use the platforms to expand their market reach.
