Addis Ababa Opens Advanced Medical Centre at Ras Desta Damtew Hospital

Addis Ababa has unveiled a new advanced medical centre at Ras Desta Damtew Hospital, marking another investment in public healthcare as the city seeks to expand treatment capacity and modernise clinical services with artificial intelligence-enabled medical technology.

Mayor Adanech Abiebie inaugurated the seven-storey facility, which is expected to double the hospital's service capacity compared with the previous building while introducing a new generation of diagnostic equipment.

The expansion significantly increases the hospital's clinical capacity. Inpatient beds have risen from 147 to 360, operating theatres from three to seven, and intensive care unit (ICU) beds to 19.

The centre is equipped with 2026-generation artificial intelligence-assisted digital MRI, CT scan, ultrasound and mobile X-ray systems. It also includes an oxygen production plant capable of generating 30,000 litres of oxygen per hour, reducing reliance on external supplies.

Beyond patient care, the development incorporates supporting infrastructure, including staff accommodation, a library, modern offices, conference facilities and a staff cafeteria.

The investment reflects Addis Ababa's continued push to expand public healthcare infrastructure by combining higher treatment capacity with advanced medical technology to meet growing demand for specialised health services.

Mayor Adanech Abiebie described the new centre as a significant milestone in the city’s efforts to improve healthcare delivery and accessibility for residents.

The facility is expected to play a key role in reducing patient referrals to other hospitals and improving overall health outcomes in the capital.

Officials believe the integration of modern technology and expanded capacity will set a new standard for public hospitals in Ethiopia.
