Addis Ababa Lifts Motorcycle Ban for Licensed Riders

October 14, 2026 | By Semahegn Nigatu

Addis Ababa has reopened its roads to licensed motorcycle riders, ending a blanket restriction that police said was necessary to curb crime and traffic violations involving two-wheelers.

The Addis Ababa Police Commission said riders with valid operating permits, including those who had renewed expired permits, could resume riding from 6am on October 14, provided they comply with traffic and transport regulations.

The decision does not amount to an unrestricted return. Police warned that riders operating without valid permits or failing to renew them would face legal action, while promising strict monitoring of motorcycle use across the capital.

Authorities had cited the use of motorcycles to commit crimes and transport stolen goods, alongside traffic offences such as running red lights, fleeing after collisions, riding without helmets and using obscured or illegible number plates.
