Addis Ababa has introduced a new digital public portal that allows residents to renew identification cards and access selected civil registration services online, marking a further step in the city’s efforts to modernise government service delivery.

The platform, launched by the Civil Registration and Residence Services Agency, enables residents to renew their IDs and apply for birth certificates without visiting government offices. In-person visits are required only to collect printed identification cards.

Yosef Nigussie, director general of the agency, said the system is intended to improve access to basic public services while easing congestion at woreda offices, where administrative backlogs have been common.

A central feature of the portal allows homeowners to verify residency electronically by sending confirmation text messages to tenants or co-residents, allowing applications to be processed remotely.

The agency said the digital service is expected to reduce long queues, shorten processing times, and improve overall efficiency in the delivery of civil registration services in the capital.
