The Addis Ababa City Administration has started construction of the Arada Good-will Village, a mixed-use urban redevelopment project that will replace deteriorated residential areas with new housing, commercial facilities and public spaces.

The project, located behind the Addis Ababa Mayor’s Office, is part of the city’s summer volunteer initiative, which aims to construct 2,500 houses and improve living conditions in low-income communities, according to Mayor Adanech Abiebie.

The Arada Charity Village will include eight nine-storey residential buildings and two four-storey market centres, alongside shared facilities, green areas and recreational spaces, the mayor said.

The project is being developed through a partnership between the city administration and private sector companies, including MIDROC Investment Group, Ethiopian Electric Utility, Belayneh Kinde Group and Yadata Juneydin, which have committed to constructing residential buildings.

Other companies participating in the initiative include TNT Construction, Grand Legacy House, ET Online College, Abiy Masresha, Dema Real Estate, Temer Real Estate, Snap Trading, Gift Real Estate, Mohammed Adnan and Amir Bedru.

Mayor Adanech said the initiative represents a shift from short-term support toward practical interventions aimed at addressing urban challenges.

"We thank the people who entrusted us not only through words but by providing practical solutions that address their challenges," she said.

The city administration said the project aims to improve housing conditions, sanitation and access to public facilities while creating a more organised urban environment.

Beyond housing construction, the summer volunteer programme will also focus on environmental cleaning, flood prevention infrastructure, food support for vulnerable residents, blood donation campaigns, tree planting, education support, free medical services and traffic management, according to the mayor.
