Addis Ababa Health Bureau Rejects Claims of New Hospital Recruitment

The Addis Ababa Health Bureau has rejected reports circulating on social media that staff have already been recruited and assigned to newly built hospitals in the capital, saying the hiring process is still underway.

The bureau said employees currently working at the newly constructed facilities were temporarily transferred from existing hospitals and health centres administered by the city government. It said no new employees had yet been recruited and assigned to the facilities.

It also disputed reports that identified certain institutions and professionals as part of the recruitment process, saying some of the institutions mentioned are not directly administered by the city government and were not involved in recruitment by the bureau.

The bureau said some reports had also listed professions that are not included in the staffing structures of the hospitals concerned. It cited emergency surgery specialists as an example, saying no vacancies had been announced for such positions and that professionals in those roles had not been assigned to the hospitals, even on a temporary basis.

Reports concerning anaesthesia professionals were also disputed. The bureau said candidates who had not yet been called for examinations were incorrectly reported as having sat for exams and been recruited. Similar claims concerning neonatal nurses and other professionals were also described as inaccurate by the bureau.

According to the bureau, recruitment for the new hospitals is being conducted through an online registration process. Applicants are required to hold valid professional licences and meet the stated eligibility requirements.

Candidates who qualify for examinations have their names published through the bureau’s official social media channels, while eligible applicants registered during the designated period are considered through the established recruitment process.

The examinations are administered with the participation of professionals from higher education institutions under the city administration, the bureau said. Selection is based on examination results, with the bureau urging candidates to compete through the formal process.

The bureau said individuals or organisations with information or evidence concerning unlawful recruitment or irregular staff assignments can submit their complaints to the city administration or the Health Bureau for investigation.

It added that it had not so far received inquiries or reports from media organisations or individuals concerning the alleged irregularities, but said it was prepared to examine any information formally submitted.
