Addis Ababa’s planned expansion of electric vehicle infrastructure is moving into the property development sector, with new construction projects expected to include charging facilities as the city prepares for a larger electric mobility network, as reported by Bisrat Radio.

The Ministry of Transport and Logistics estimates that the capital will require 1,176 electric vehicle charging stations within the next 10 years to meet expected demand.

Bareo Hassen, State Minister of Transport and Logistics, said developers will be required to demonstrate plans for charging infrastructure before receiving construction approval. Speaking to Bisrat Radio, he said the measure is being implemented under Addis Ababa’s building regulations.

The requirement comes as the city’s existing charging capacity remains limited. According to the ministry, Addis Ababa currently has fewer than 200 fast-charging stations, creating a gap that authorities are seeking to close through public-private cooperation.

The government is also encouraging hotels to participate in the expansion by allocating parking areas, including basement spaces, for charging services. Star-rated hotels are among the establishments being targeted as potential locations for additional charging points.

The initiative is being carried out in coordination with hotel operators, the Addis Ababa Tourism and Hotels Bureau and the Ministry of Tourism as authorities seek to increase charging access in commercial areas.

Beyond the hospitality sector, the ministry is working with Ethiopian telecommunications providers, Ethiopian Electric Utility, private companies, real estate developers and the city administration to support the rollout of charging infrastructure.
