The Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority has renewed the competency certificates of 3,362 food and health-related establishments in July and August, completing 60 percent of the target it set for the two-month period.

The authority had planned to renew certificates for 5,589 establishments during the first two months of the 2019 Ethiopian fiscal year as part of a wider programme covering 21,064 establishments across the city, from central facilities to cluster-level institutions.

The certificate renewal process runs from July 1 to December 30. The authority has been conducting gap assessments before renewal applications to identify deficiencies at establishments and provide feedback on measures required to meet certification requirements.

The process has also been shifted from a manual system to an online platform, allowing establishments to submit renewal applications without visiting the authority in person.

Bezayeit Girma, director of competency certification for food and health-related establishments at the authority, said establishments can submit their applications through the authority's online licensing portal.

The authority has urged establishments to adopt the new online process and complete their certificate renewals within the prescribed period.

It also warned that establishments found operating without renewed competency certificates will face measures in accordance with its legal mandate and responsibilities.
