Abraham Belay Appointed Commissioner of Ethiopia Nuclear Energy Commission

Abraham Belay (PhD) has been appointed Commissioner of the Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

Belay, who has been serving as Minister of Irrigation and Lowlands, took up the new position on September 14, 2026.

An electrical engineer by profession, Belay has held several senior government positions, including Minister of Innovation and Technology, head of the provisional administration of Tigray and Minister of Defence. He has also served as chief executive of Ethiopian Electric Power and held board leadership roles at several state institutions, including Ethiopian Electric Power and the Ethiopian Communications Authority.

He most recently led the Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands, where he was involved in government efforts to expand irrigation development and establish standards and regulations for the sector.

The Ethiopian Nuclear Energy Commission was established by the Council of Ministers in 2025, with Sadokan Debebe serving as its first commissioner.

Belay’s appointment brings an official with an engineering and technology background to an institution tasked with overseeing Ethiopia’s nuclear energy activities and the development of the country’s peaceful uses of nuclear technology.
