The Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria has raised concern over reported arrests and harassment of individuals linked to singer Teddy Afro following the release of his latest album *Etorika* on April 16, 2026. The Centre reported that several associates, including spokesperson Mahlet Solomon and close associate Yusuf Yassin, were detained shortly after the release.

The album has reportedly surpassed 100 million views on YouTube within a week and sparked intense debate regarding its political and social themes. Security forces also reportedly visited the artist’s residence without a warrant and raided his private studio, confiscating production equipment.

According to the University body, more than 100 young people have been detained since mid-April for allegedly listening to the album's critical songs.

The Centre noted that these incidents represent a serious restriction on artistic expression and cited a 2026 African Commission resolution calling for the protection of artistic freedom. It urged Ethiopian authorities to end the harassment and return confiscated property.
