The United States has condemned an armed assault on World Food Programme (WFP) humanitarian workers in South Sudan’s Jonglei State on September 29, during which food intended for nearly 20,000 people was forcibly offloaded.

The US said the attack demonstrated how armed groups were obstructing humanitarian assistance in a country facing a severe crisis, with vulnerable communities bearing the cost.

“Humanitarian workers must never be targets,” the US said in a statement, calling on South Sudan’s leaders and all parties to ensure safe and unimpeded humanitarian access, prevent further attacks and hold those responsible accountable.

Washington described the humanitarian crisis as “manmade” and urged South Sudan’s leaders to direct public revenue towards providing basic services.

The statement did not identify those responsible for the assault or specify the quantity of food seized or offloaded. It also did not provide details on whether the aid had subsequently reached its intended recipients.
