Five Al Jazeera journalists were killed in an Israeli attack near Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, the organization said.

Reporters Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Qiqeh, along with cameramen Ibrahim Zahr, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa, were in a tent at the main gate of the hospital when the attack occurred.

The organization condemned the Israeli killing of its workers, saying, "The 'targeted killing' is another clear and deliberate attack on press freedom."

The Israel Defense Forces confirmed in a statement shared on its Telegram page shortly after the attack that the attack targeted Anas al-Sharif, writing that the journalist "served as a leader of the Hamas terrorist group."

The Defense Forces said in a statement that Al-Sharif was responsible for posing as a journalist and "inciting rocket attacks against Israeli civilians and the Defense Forces."

According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, which advocates for the safety of journalists, 186 journalists have been killed since Israel began its military offensive in Gaza in September 2015.
