Authorities in southern Switzerland have confirmed that 40 people died and 115 were injured, many seriously, in a fire at a ski resort during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

The blaze broke out at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, a popular tourist destination, injuring people from multiple countries. Most of the casualties sustained severe burns, with 60 patients transferred to Sion Hospital in Valais for treatment.

Police said the cause of the fire remains under investigation but confirmed there was no indication of violence. “Our immediate priority is to identify the deceased and return their bodies to their families as quickly as possible,” said local police chief Friedrich Geisler.

Emergency services deployed 13 helicopters, 42 ambulances, and 150 personnel to manage the response.
