Residents of Nono Woreda, West Shewa Zone, Oromia Region, said that more than 25 people, including women and children, were killed in an attack on October 9, 2018.

Local residents said that the attackers were “Fano militants” who they said were active in the area.

Residents said the militants crossed from Abshge Woreda in Gurage Zone to Alo Denki Kebele in Nono Woreda, "moving from house to house, killing elders, children, and even pregnant women."

They told Addis Standard that gunmen from Abashge attacked the village with knives at night and then opened fire. “So far, we have buried 29 people; six people have been sent to another area for treatment; the whereabouts of two women are still unknown,” the resident said.

Residents told Addis Standard that although the area had previously been peaceful, local security forces were unable to prevent the attack as the militants were heavily armed.

In 2023, four members of a family were killed and six others were injured in a similar attack by militants. The attack also resulted in the destruction of more than 40 farmers' houses and livestock.
