The government of Kenya has announced that 21 people have died in a landslide that occurred following heavy rains in western Kenya.

Kenya's Interior Minister Kipchumba Mukomen said in a statement that 30 people were reported missing by their families but have not been found.

The minister said 25 people who were seriously injured in the accident were airlifted for treatment.

The minister said the bodies of those who died in the disaster were being airlifted to another location.

The Kenya Red Cross, which is supporting the rescue efforts, said areas hit hard by the disaster are still inaccessible by road due to landslides and flash floods.

The government has urged citizens living near rivers that swell during the rainy season and in areas prone to landslides to relocate to safer areas.
