14 Killed After Landslide Strikes Ethiopian Monastery During Heavy Rains

Fourteen people have been killed and five others injured after a landslide struck Tsadkane Debre Mitmaq Kidist Maryam Monastery in Ethiopia, following heavy rainfall at the start of the rainy season. The incident occurred at the monastery as worshippers from different parts of the country had gathered for religious activities, including pilgrimages, spiritual retreats and holy water visits.

The affected individuals were among the worshippers present at the monastery when the sudden landslide occurred, according to a statement from the local diocese. The five injured people sustained both serious and minor injuries. Abune Kalemintos, archbishop of the diocese, visited the site following the incident and conducted a prayer service for those who died. He also offered support to the injured and families affected by the disaster.

The incident highlights the risks posed by heavy seasonal rainfall in areas vulnerable to landslides. Ethiopia’s rainy season, which typically runs from June to September, often brings increased risks of flooding and slope instability in mountainous and highland areas. Authorities and local communities have previously faced challenges responding to weather-related disasters, including landslides and floods, particularly in areas with steep terrain and limited infrastructure.
