Twelve NATO allies have committed to investing 50.66 billion US dollars over the next decade to strengthen deep precision strike capabilities as European members of the alliance seek to expand their role in collective defence.

The commitment was announced in a joint statement by leaders of Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Türkiye and the United Kingdom, who said the investment would support the development and delivery of capabilities considered essential to NATO’s defence plans.

The countries said the initiative comes as non-US allies increase defence spending and develop new military capabilities to strengthen deterrence and defence across the alliance.

The leaders said Europe’s growing responsibility for transatlantic security requires allies to increase their contributions, particularly in areas where additional capabilities are needed.

“Deep Precision Strike” capabilities are intended to provide NATO with the ability to defend against and deny military advantages to potential adversaries, the statement said.

The allies said recent adjustments to US forces have reinforced the need for European members to accelerate investment in these capabilities through both national programmes and multinational initiatives.

They added that strengthening deep precision strike capacity would contribute to NATO’s ability to deter potential threats by demonstrating credible military capabilities.

The commitment forms part of wider efforts by European NATO members to increase defence readiness and expand their contribution to the alliance’s security objectives.
