Ten countries have condemned the 10-year prison sentence imposed on Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong, calling for an end to prosecutions under the territory's National Security Law (NSL).

In a joint statement, the foreign ministries of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States said Wong's sentence followed a further charge under the security legislation.

The governments said the sentence, alongside the recent convictions of leaders of the Hong Kong Alliance under the same law, illustrated what they described as the use of the NSL to target individuals for political expression and participation.

They called for an immediate end to what they termed unjust prosecutions under the legislation and urged authorities in Beijing and Hong Kong to uphold their international commitments.

The statement also called on the authorities to respect the rights and freedoms guaranteed to Hong Kong residents under the Sino-British Joint Declaration signed in 1984.

The joint intervention adds to international criticism of Hong Kong's national security legislation and its application against pro-democracy figures.
